It seems that, no matter where we go in the world in this day and age, the lives of billions of people are subordinated to the whims and wills of small groups of individuals with oversized amounts of power. By this, I’m of course referring to the governments of the world, where autocracies and dictatorships have ruled with an iron fist for centuries and even so-called “democracies” have stifled their citizens’ freedom and censored any view that doesn’t conform to their own more and more frequently.
It’s not hard to understand why: many of us have grown rather complacent, developing innate desires for someone else to look after our safety, so much so that we’re willing to sacrifice our individuality, right to privacy, and so much more in the hopes of living a less tumultuous life. Neil Gorsuch, a Justice in the Supreme Court of the United States, explained this quite clearly in a statement for a recent Supreme Court case:
