Remember back in 2021 when NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. made waves by announcing he was taking his entire base salary in Bitcoin? The naysayers were out in full force, bleating about volatility, risk, and how "dumb" it was to trust that "magic internet money."
Those folks are awfully quiet now, aren't they?
Because here we are, in mid-2025, and Odell Beckham Jr. is taking a well-deserved victory lap. His 2021 base salary, a cool $750,000 that he chose to receive in Bitcoin when it was around $64,000 per coin, is now estimated to be worth approximately $1.3 million to $1.4 million. That's nearly a doubling of his purchasing power in just a few short years, all while the fiat dollar has continued its relentless march towards worthlessness.
Think about that for a second. While most athletes, and indeed most people, are content to receive their hard-earned money in rapidly depreciating paper currency, Odell Beckham Jr. made a conscious choice for sound money. He chose to store his value in something that is mathematically scarce, decentralized, and immune to the endless printing presses of central banks. He wasn't "investing" in a risky asset; he was simply opting into a superior monetary system.
This isn't just about a lucky gamble; it's about foresight. It's about understanding the fundamental difference between Bitcoin and fiat. One is designed to preserve value over time, while the other is designed to be inflated away. Odell Beckham Jr. publicly scoffed at his critics recently, saying, "Sooooo bitcoin is at an ALL TIME high today…safe to say we still happy with our decision." And frankly, who can blame him?
His decision serves as a powerful, real-world lesson. When you truly understand Bitcoin for what it is – the hardest money humanity has ever created – taking your salary in it isn't a "risk." It's a strategic move to secure your future against the inevitable decay of the fiat system.
Suffice it to say, Odell Beckham Jr.'s play for sound money is a touchdown for common sense, and a clear signal for anyone still questioning Bitcoin's role as the money of the future.
