Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has announced that he will accept Bitcoin donations from supporters of his 2024 presidential campaign. Suarez said that he believes Bitcoin can help to democratize opportunities for wealth creation, and he has criticized the Biden administration for its approach of attempting to regulate Bitcoin through enforcement without understanding how Bitcoin actually works.
Suarez's announcement shows further evidence of the growing adoption of Bitcoin in mainstream political fundraising – he is at least the second presidential candidate to accept Bitcoin donations, with Robert Kennedy Jr. having announced that he would accept them during a speech at this year’s Bitcoin conference in Miami.
Suarez's decision will likely be welcomed by the Bitcoin community, which has long been critical of the traditional financial system and the inequities it has driven and continues to drive around the world.
Bitcoin offers a way to bypass the traditional financial system altogether, not to mention that it generally makes financial transactions more transparent and efficient. With that in mind, it’s not hard to imagine that other politicians might choose to use Bitcoin moving forward.
